This book enthralled me and so has each addition to the series since. This was the rare event where a movie made me want to read the book. Before the trailer for this film came out, I had never heard of the series and even though people generally weren't fans of the film (I may be one of the few who enjoyed it) it certainly triggered my interest in the series.
Our main character, Four (Or John as he adopts as his name in his new town) has lived his entire life on the run. He is from one of the 18 life sustaining planets in the Universe, Lorien. His home planet was invaded and destroyed by the Mogadorians who have now followed him and the 8 other children who were sent to earth to sustain the Lorien race and they can only be killed in the order they were named, three have already died and John is number four.

The movie, as most films do, cut out a great bit of detail that seemed essential to my complete understanding of this story. I needed to know the answers and so I turned to the best source, the book!

Where was Lorien, what was it like there? Where are the other numbers? Why are the Mogs so determined to extinguish these children from existence? There were so many questions that I left the film with that were completely answered in the book. Not only were they answered it went above and beyond and I finished the book with an entirely new understanding of this fictional planet.

This fantastical race co-exists in our world. They hide and blend among us as human beings. They look like us, talk and act like us, only they have accelerated powers and abilities. Then there is Sam, the adorable loveable nerdy but determined Sam. There is basically nothing not to love about this sidekick character.

I wouldn’t generally label myself a fan of science fiction novels; for a long time I didn’t think I was interested in that genre. Clearly, I was mistaken. I have often said that it only takes one good book to get you hooked, and that was definitely the case here. I was sucked into this story and the moment it was finished I wanted more, needed more. Luckily there are six more books in the series now and countless novellas to tide you over in between.

I recommend this book to everyone now and have gotten several of my friends hooked on the series as well. If you love action packed stories, you will love this intriguing read! If you’re already a fan of Sci-Fi and Fantasy books what are you waiting for? You absolutely cannot miss out on this gem!

Recommendation: If you like, fantasy and Sci-fi read this book! It is great.
